You don't actually believe that a tax increase on cigarettes is designed to change public attitudes or get people to give it up, do you?
If you need any more proof just check out what is happening in New Hampshire.
The state legislature voted in the spring to increase the tax on cigarettes if tax revenues from the sale of the product did not hit $50 million dollars.
Well it looks like "sales" will not meet the goal so the price will be going up. Yes, fewer sales (fewer smokers) translates in to less dollars for politicians to spend.
I thought it was a good thing if cigarette usage went down?
Not if you are depending upon the cash for other projects.
I guess if paying more taxes is the patriotic thing to do (according to one presidential candidate) I guess smoking more is too !
